How Rearranging Our School Day Is Working Much Better

So, as you might imagine, my pregnancy has thrown our school day schedule for a bit of a loop.  Mainly because I’m a slow riser, tire quickly, and nap frequently. 🙂 Okay, not really all of those things, but that’s how I feel.  So our day is moving a little more slowly these days.  I’ve found that moving our schedule around a bit is working better for us right now.

We start anywhere from 9am-11am, depending on how I’m feeling.  Not ideal, but we’re making it work.  My guys do not mind the extra morning play time at all! 🙂 After breakfast and clean-up, we generally accomplish the following in the morning:

Bible Time: Picture, Ponder, Pray, & Awana verse review
Daily Poetry Reading: Right now we’re reading A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson
Fine Arts Time: We focus on one artist for a few weeks, which includes looking at their well-known pieces of art, reading a bit of biography on the artist, and learning about their art pieces.  By the end of a few weeks, I like them to be able to name the works of arts that we’ve keyed in on.  This is not something we do daily, but more like 2-3 times a week.
First Language Lessons: I’m using one book with my oldest two and my youngest two participate when they like.
CC memory work review: I hold the memory work flashcards and ask them each questions in turn.  For today’s fun, with each correct answer they drew their initials on chalkboard blocks and added them to the tower.  The scribbly blocks are my little girl’s contributions.  🙂

Because all of my littles are mostly included in some way with each activity, it makes the morning fun for us to do together.  Then we break for lunch, clean-up and some play time before we read together.  Most days, we’re reading from our Ambleside list, but we also inject some seasonal reads as well.  After I read Aesop’s Fables and Paddle To The Sea today, my older boys kept right on reading both to themselves while the littles went down for naps.  We’ve all learned so much and really enjoyed the selections from Ambleside Online.

After we’re done reading aloud together, my older boys embark on schoolwork they can complete independently for the most part and my littlest two nap.

Piano practice
Math lessons
Independent reading time
PreScripts
Spelling Workout

I do need to spend individual teaching time with them for math, but that probably happens only 3 out of 4 days right now.  (We don’t do math on Mondays after CC right now.)  While they work and my youngest ones nap, sometimes I need to snack, but often I lay down on the couch for a quick snooze.  I don’t always sleep, but the rest is so good for me right now.

Learning to hold my schedule and expectations loosely has helped the peace in my heart and our home.  How about you? Anything given you cause to rearrange your day? What’s worked? What hasn’t? I’d love to hear!
