The View From Here – New Pope Announced

As history unfolded before our eyes, we were given the chance to turn today’s announcement of the new pope, Pope Francis I, into many impromptu lessons.  We reviewed our theology, Latin, geography, history, and flag recognition.

The channel we were watching placed some of the first words spoken during the announcement on the screen in Latin and English.  I paused it and it was a great opportunity for my boys to look for the Latin noun declensions on the screen.  After spotting them, I hit play again so they could listen for the sounds they knew.  Who ever said Latin is not a spoken language? ; )

Here is my oldest finding Argentina on our wall map.  After I showed them an image of the flag of Argentina, they found it on the lower part of our wall map.

I’m glad we seized the moment to review things we knew and learn some new things as well.

If you missed the announcement today, check out this video (the 3rd video in the article titled ‘We have a pope!’)  which contains some of the Latin captions.

We talked about this at the dinner table last night, and I used some of your ideas from above. We checked the map, talked about different church history points of the timeline, and had great theological conversations. 🙂
