How We Do Review – Grammar by Subject

For this second How We Do Review post, I’ll be sharing how we review grammar at home for each of the seven subjects covered through CC – history, latin, english, science, math, geography, and fine arts.

I divide up or group the subjects based on how much time I think we’ll need for each one and how our extra activities factor in to our time.  For instance, we participate in an AWANA club on Wednesday nights so I chose subjects for Wednesdays that don’t require much prep work before or clean up after.  Also, our CC community meets on Monday mornings, so I don’t want anything too intensive for the afternoon at home.  So, our grammar by subject review looks like this —

Monday —  Latin and English

Tuesday — History

Wednesday — Math and Geography

Thursday — Science

Friday — Fine Arts

Each day, we’ll start our grammar time (see where this fits in our daily schedule here) by reviewing the most recent grammar for all of the subjects with the CD music, motions learned at our community, and reciting them aloud.  Next, we’ll recite/review all of the grammar (current & previous week/s) for that day’s subject(s).

After that, for some subjects, we’ll expound on the new grammar by learning more about the grammar and for others, we’ll simply employ different memorization methods.  Here are some examples of what we’ll do…

For Latin and English, we’ll use flashcards, play games, and do copy work in our notebooks.

For History, we’ll read more about our history sentences in Story of the World, various library books, and online resources.  I also have some fun activities planned to immerse ourselves in ancient history.

For Math, we’ll complete various worksheets, play review games, and demonstrate concepts with fun math manipulatives.

In Science, we’re going to read, take nature walks and collect treasures, draw and write in our notebooks, watch dvds, use online resources, and experiment.

and finally, for Fine Arts, we’ll look at art books, visit museums, listen to classical music, read about artists and composers, and have free art time.

Stay tuned for specific weekly ideas — I hope to stop pinning & start picking over this next week!

How about you? How do you review?

By review – I think of the memorizing part of this. For memorizing, we quiz at dinner with the flashcards. We are now posting the weekly memory work in the dining room to help with this as well. I also find that listening in the van to the songs helps them a ton so we mainly listen to CC music all school year. If we haven’t driven anywhere that week, they know less of their memory work. We review memory work in the grocery store, walking in parking lots, and waiting at doctor’s offices (any time I can think of to review). For expanding on our learning (or explaining the memory work), we use tons of library books, the science cards from CC (this year), science snippets, history highlights (both from CC connected), reading the timeline cards . . . things like that. I’m trying to make this year more about mastering the memory work that the expanding our learning, but I’m sure it will be a combination.
