Railroad Field Trip

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania
& The Strasburg Railroad

Recently our family joined our CC group in a field trip to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania & The Strasburg Railroad.  We had such a fun time! Our family was in a group with Steve as our guide.  He was attentive & relaxed with our young students.  Steve shared interesting details about train history in fun ways so the littles could remember the information and then regularly reviewed it with them. Any of those memorization tools sound familiar to you?

The tour was also very hands-on! The littles shoveled coal, made a train track, bought, sold & punched train tickets. We were also able to board 2 trains to check them out & play in the educational center with a variety of toy trains. So many highlights!

After that, our group boarded a Strasburg steam engine train for a ride out to a picnic grove where we enjoyed our packed lunches, played around, & boarded the train for our return trip to the Strasburg train station.

My littles are already asking when we can go again!  An added side bonus, we were able to observe some Amish families working in their fields in traditional early American style – with horse or hand drawn plows.  Seize every learning opportunity, right?

What field trips have you done this year? Any favorites that your family might visit again?
