50 States Before They Graduate: Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park

Arches National Park

Our trip to Arches National Park had a rough beginning and a bumpy, but happy ending. We jumped out of our car in the first parking lot to walk a trail with all the littles when the wind suddenly kicked up so badly and just didn’t quit. Sand was in our eyes and mouths, and stinging our skin as the wind whipped us repeatedly. After a brief and futile attempt down the trail, I returned to the car with the littles while Dave took the camera to explore alone. We watched him as far as we could as he braved the sandstorm to see the epic rock formations up close and take beautiful pictures. We drove throughout the park and Dave continued to get out for good pictures. He and the camera were quite sandy. Even from the car, our views were spectacular.

After a bit of time in the park in a spontaneous moment, we spotted signs for an off-roading trail and went for it. I mean, after all, it was a rental car. 😉 This was such a great decision and really (can I say this again?) one of my favorite memories from the trip! We drove for about 8 miles. It was really rough at times! Signs were rare. We accidentally drove off the trail at one point and nearly found ourselves stuck between some very large rocks. Thankfully we noticed just in time to reverse and make a few strategic turns back to the trail. It was SO fun!
