Notebooking Our Way Through CC Cycle 3

NotebookingCycle3Things sometimes take longer than you expect.  Like home projects always or anything else with a newborn. 🙂  But, despite taking longer than I expected, I have my littles’ classical notebooks ready to go for this CC year – cycle 3.  Here I’ll share with you the printables I’m using and how our notebook is set up.

I have a one inch three ring binder for each little.  I added 24 numbered tab dividers to the notebook, providing for one section for each week of memory work.  Last year I divided by subject, but I think by week will work better.  Since I’ve divided them by week, I can simply instruct my littles to complete all the sheets in that divider during the week.  They can divide up the work however they’d like, but it must all be completed by Friday.  (Our campus meets on Monday.)  I’m hoping this will give them some freedom and a chance to be responsible with a little bit of independence while they’re still young.

This year I also decided to print all 24 weeks work at the beginning of the year, unlike last year where I only printed portions at a time. It was a lot of work up front, but I think worth it to have it ready to go.  Now I don’t need to worry about it when I’m running out of steam at the end of the year or if someone gets sick.

Simply because it took less time, I focused exclusively on finding CC ready worksheets. I also want to be sure they’re practicing the exact wording of the memory work, in case any of them are seeking memory master status.  So, I used the work of other bloggers or looked on CC Connected.  But, don’t fret! If you’re unable to join CC Connected, stay tuned, because I’m preparing a post on easy ways to set up a classical notebook on your own.  But, first, here’s a list of my favorite CC printables:

History: These worksheets are for illustrating. For some weeks, I simply printed a blank illustration page, like you can find here.  My guys will copy the history sentence after correctly ordering the cards made by Melody.  I love using the history sentence cards together with the illustration pages, because the pictures Melody chooses lend clues to my guys on what the sentence would look like in action, therefore inspiring their drawings.

(UPDATED to add these pages which Suzanne just uploaded to CC3.  Due to the changes with the website, I haven’t been able to access them yet, but I’m sure they’re great as always!)

Latin: These are trace and copywork pages for the Latin grammar, rules, and John 1 presented this cycle, also from Suzanne.

Science: Tara has provided a cut & paste version, a label version, and an answer key for the science memory work.  For my guys, I decided to simply print out the label version.  They’ll look for the correct answer in the word bank and copy them into the empty spaces.

Geography: You can’t go wrong with tried and true! Check out the blackline maps from CC.  Especially if you have a student looking to be a memory master or moving up to Challenge soon, blackline is the way to go.

Math: For the math laws, I never quite found what I was looking for on CC Connected, which was simple copywork, so I created some print copywork myself which I’ve now uploaded to CC Connected.

There you go! I hope you find this list helpful! Are you wondering why I chose so many simple copywork pages? For a couple of reasons: 1) I wanted to stay classical! 2) There is much to be gained in simple copywork – detail, focus, concentration, neatness, and of course, memorization of the work.

Did I miss any of your favorites from CC Connected? If so, please post in the comments! I’m sure others would like to know too!

UPDATE: I’ve removed the following printables [(C3Wks1-6 (7-12,13-18,19-24) History Statements Fill-in PDF by user p31earthmama),
(CC3 History Sentences to Illustrate Updated 3 by user loriberlie), and (MapsCycle3Sem1 (& corrected 2) PDF by user heathergwyn)] from the list, because the information used is from the 3rd edition of the Foundations Guide, rather than the most recent – 4th.  The changes are small & I missed it my first pass through.  I’m so sorry for any inconvenience! Can we please blame it on baby brain due to lack of sleep?

If you’ve already printed them and are wondering what you need to re-do, the changes for history are to weeks 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, and 22 and for geography weeks 13, 18, 20, and 22.

I love this post, and am so appreciative that all subjects are listed. I see some names of CC Mama’s that I hadn’t seen before, so am looking forward to checking their contributions out. Thank you for sharing what must have been hours of work on your part. I do have a question/caution, though, about the memory work on CC Connected right now. The FG was updated to the 4th edition in the summer of 2012, so anything uploaded earlier than that requires some comparison, because there ARE some changes….and our work is memorized word-for-word. Some of it is minor (changing the numeral 4 to “four”), but even the geography has an extra river added on Week 18. I think that’s why there is frustration that little is being uploaded because of the change-over to a bright-n-shiny website. I’m so impatient…and I too love “heathergwyn” geography, that I just printed it all and put sticky notes on the pages that I’ll need to find a more current update for (which will be much easier after the school year gets up and running and Mama’s have (hopefully) uploaded their more current treasures)! Just an FYI…

    • Beth Watson says

yes, Lori! that’s true! I did consider that & thought I double checked all the resources I shared prior to doing so. But, it sounds as though I missed the geography. I’ll look at that & make a note. Did you notice any others? Thanks for the help!

    • Beth Watson says

hey Lori! I checked the geography & didn’t see anything wrong. Would you mind telling me what errors you found? I’d hate to be sharing this & have it be the wrong info. Thanks so much!

      • Lori says

Hello!! I’m using as reference a PDF that CC put out when the 4th edition was published that has each cycle listed and each subject, old & new. As for Geography, only 4 weeks are affected, and most are minor. Week 13-the order is different (doesn’t matter on her maps), Week 18-the Columbia River is added, Week 20-the word “canal” was added to each item, and Week 22-the word “desert” was added to each item. History has 6 weeks that change the wording, Science has the most, with 16 weeks affected. With the new website, I can’t find the list anymore online to give you a link, but I had saved the PDF on my computer, so would be happy to email it to you. If you can find the new link, that would be awesome!!!! (Maybe it’s in the sharing center?)

        • Beth Watson says

Hi Lori! Yes, I have that PDF from last time. Thank you for sending it though! I was using Melody’s flip book for reference just cause it seemed easier. Did you see errors in any of the other resources I linked? Thanks so much for helping & commenting! Can I blame some of this on newborn baby brain? 🙂

          • Katherine says

Hi Beth! Thank you so much for all your hard work! This will be our 1st year in CC and your website has been a blessing 🙂 I downloaded all of your recommended resources for notebooking. However, I just saw your conversation with Lori and I’m wondering if some of them are not updated?? Don’t want to print anything out yet :/ Thanks!

          • Beth Watson says

Hi Katherine! Thank you so much for asking. I double checked all the printables. Some of the history and geography printables were outdated. I am SO sorry for the mistake on my part! Thank you to you & Lori for pointing them out. At the bottom of the post, you’ll see my notes.

          • Lori says

Hi, Beth & Kathrine! I was on C3 the other day and noticed that CC Mama “annettelam” has updated all of her trifold board sheet PDFs to match the 4th edition! Yay! For Geography, I actually prefer the ones by “heathergwyn”, so I just printed the few weeks that needed correcting, but I am happy to have a complete set for the 24 weeks… Now, off to find more C3 treasures….

  2. Jenny McGoldrick says

My 5 yr old really hates copy work. 🙁 any ideas on how to win her over? I don’t want to lose this valuable learning tool, but I don’t want her to hate school either!

    • Beth Watson says

Jenny, have you tried using other tools than a pencil and paper? With my littler ones, we’ll sometimes use chalk & chalkboard, whiteboard w/ whiteboard crayons/pencils/markers, etc. The whiteboard seems especially appealing, bc the marker glides making the writing a little easier. I’ll also sometimes write with chalk on a chalkboard & they’ll use a small paintbrush dipped in water to trace the words. And one more idea, is to have her recite the memory work to you while you write it – a form of dictating, which is very classical.

Because she’s only 5, I would also really limit the copywork. My 5 year old (boy) will be doing very little. He’s still learning to write his letters well, so practicing his letters is the only copywork I’ll require from him this year. I have other things prepared for him though in case he wants to do more. He sometimes wants to, bc of his older brothers doing it. In The Core, Leigh talks about copywork being about quality and not quantity, so allowing them to focus on writing the letter A really well 3-4 times is better than a sheet of progressively worsening As. Know what I mean? Thanks for asking! I hope this helps! 🙂

  3. says

Thank you SO MUCH for this valuable resource! I plan on doing this and it is SO GENEROUS of you to share what you have done and with so much detail! I don’t know how all you mommies that post so much find the time. I feel like my days are so short! 🙁 THANK YOU AGAIN!!!! You are a blessing.

  4. says

I’m loving all your resources and am in awe of all you’re doing with a new family member!! You inspire me!
This is my first year with a CC community and teaching with CC period. How do I access these users and their awesome creations? I haven’t subscribed but have a login. Is that the secret? I just need to subscribe to the website?
    Thank you SO much!!

    • Beth Watson says

Yes, once your director adds you then you can simply subscribe to CC Connected – on the right side of the webpage! Thanks for the encouragement, vkbowers! 🙂

  5. Jennifer Ott says

I LOVE this! We won’t be joining a group because we are moving to Africa as missionaries :), but we will be basing all our learning off cycle 3 (I have the entire timeline, all the science cards, the artist and composer cards, Foundations guide, resource and audio cds, trivium tables, etc.), and I want to do notebooking pages to expand our learning. I can’t afford CC connected, so I will stay tuned to see what you have to say in the future! I was considering A Journey Through Learning’s Learning Activity Book just to keep things simple.

    • Beth Watson says

Jennifer, that’s awesome! What part of Africa? I spent a month in Zimbabwe as a teenager, have friends working as missionaries there & part of my heart is still there! I hope our whole family can return one day 🙂

      • Jennifer Ott says

We will be in Kitwe, Zambia, helping start a medical clinic (my husband is a nurse, and there is an American doctor going over in September) at an orphanage (where I will be augmenting the current program to include infants and toddlers). We flew through Zimbabwe briefly on our way there last time. We are (mostly) excited. I am currently trying to pare down all our possessions to fit in 12 suitcases :O!

        • Beth Watson says

Wow! We briefly saw Zambia during our visit, because we took a cruise at dusk down the Zambezi River. Fingers crossed for your suitcase paring down. I’ve been on a mission to simplify around the house, but that seems like the ultimate challenge.

  6. says

I’ve been busily saving things from C3 and trying to plan what I think out year will look like =) I’m trying not to do too much though, until I actually get my feet wet and see how CC is going to work for our homeschool! Thanks for all the great ideas!

    • Beth Watson says

Yes, Amy! Great approach 🙂 You kinda have an advantage since you already have a good handle on what classical education is 🙂 I’ll be excited to hear how your year is going!

  7. Dianna says

Thanks for all your hard work. I’m planning to put together a classical notebook for the first time for my 2nd grader. I also have a kinder, but it is work to get him to do one page of letters in his handwriting book. 🙂

  8. Cari says

    Beth-
I am new to homeshooling and CC. I really appreciate all your work. I cannot find a few things under your math suggestions. I noted my comments below. Can you help me out? I might not be doing the search correctly but I was able to find all other subjects.

Math: For the math laws, I never quite found what I was looking for on CC Connected, which was simple copywork, so I created some print copywork myself which I’ve now uploaded to CC Connected. ( What am I looking for?)

    Thanks!
    Cari

    • Beth Watson says

Oooo, Cari! I’m not sure! I haven’t been back on since CC redid the site. I’m hoping they’re all still there. I can try to double check later this afternoon. I’ll let you know what I find out!

If it’s simply a search issue (not sure how the new search parameters are set up), try looking just by the user & scrolling through options. Perhaps they’re adding files back on?

    • Brittany says

I am having the same issues as Cari. I have found Math weeks 20-24 but cannot find 12-19. They are the last thing I need to make our 2014-2015 notebooking complete. Any new news?

      • Brittany says

I found it…I had to take off all filters except your user name. Then it worked, sorry for the confusion. BTW, thank you, thank you, and thank you again. These are a life saver!

  9. Sonya says

Hello! Thank you for amazing resources…Do you have a section for Cycle 3 printables? We are in week 1 and I am interested in what you use.

    • Beth Watson says

Sonya, do you mean other than the ones I listed here from CC Connected? I did a post on How to Create Your Own Classical Notebook that involves no printables. If you’re not wanting to use CC Connected, maybe that would help?

  10. Stacey says

Hi Beth 🙂 Thanks for all your hard work! It’s really helping me get organized this year. I had a question about the notebooks. About how many pages do you put in there for each week? I was thinking about having my son do copywork for each subject everyday, but I’m wondering if that’s overkill. I want to keep it simple, but he likes to stay busy. I have books to read for history and fun stuff for science, so I know that will help too. Thanks for any feedback 🙂

    • Beth Watson says

Hi Stacey! I have one page for each subject for the week. Because this is only one way we review the memory work, I don’t think they need to do each subject in the notebook every day. I’m guessing each subject each day would be overkill, but it probably depends a lot on your son. Hope this helps! 🙂

      • amy says

Beth, Have you checked out all the notebooking sheets Sheri Ellis has on CC Connected? I don’t use them for every piece of memory work covered each week, but they are another great resource. I just pick and choose what I print out for each week.

        • Beth Watson says

I have Amy & used some myself. They are great! 🙂 I believe when I wrote this post, Sheri didn’t have them uploaded onto CC Connected, so I didn’t want to share them yet. Thanks for sharing what you use!

I’m having a hard time printing your math copy work…the lines are smaller then the other copy work pages. what am I doing wrong? thanks so much!!!
