Traveling the 50 States with the Flat Littles: Louisiana

Thanks to Abby from Louisiana for sending along these great pictures of the Flat Littles visiting two places with their family: the Chalmette Battlefield during the Bicentennial Celebration of the Battle of New Orleans and the replicas of the Nina and Santa Maria in Houma, LA.

The Chalmette Battlefield is in the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The Battle of New Orleans might be the only battle in U.S. history where a future president and lawless pirate joined forces. And I’m pretty sure this is the only national park named after a pirate. (You can learn more about Jean Lafitte here.) At the time, it was considered a win for the union, but history later declared it a stalemate. It’s a fascinating story and you can learn more about it here.

These Nina and Pinta replicas are said to be very accurate. This picture demonstrates their size well. The ships actually travel to many ports. You can visit The Columbus Foundation website for their schedule and other details on seeing these “floating museums” for yourself.
Traveling somewhere soon? Have a local place of interest? Visit here to see how you can bring the Flat Littles along for the trip.
