Field Trip – Ringing Rocks Park

Our final field trip of the CC school year happened this past Friday.  We met up with many families from our campus at Ringing Rocks Park in Upper Black Eddy, PA.  It’s really a unique park, in total over 120 acres in size, with 7-8 of the acres piled 10 feet high in boulders of various sizes. Some of these rocks, when struck by another smaller rock or hammer, make a sound like a ringing bell.  These rocks are considered “live,” while the ones that simply thud are “dead.”  Scientists have not been able to fully explain why the rocks make this sound at all, why only some of the rocks make this sound, or how the rocks came to be piled in these fields in the first place.  Cool, huh?

So, armed with hammers, the littles scampered quickly over the rocks spending equal parts banging rocks and exploring all around them.  Really, I couldn’t believe how quickly they got around on these huge rocks!

Ringing Rocks Park also contains the largest waterfall in Bucks County, PA which we climbed down. My littles were especially fond of this part.

Such a great trip!  If you’re in the area, I’d definitely recommend it.

Great pictures. We had a lot of fun researching why the rocks rang. It was a bit confusing but still interesting. It was cool that they still haven’t totally figured out why they ring. It’s something for one of our little scientists to maybe figure out one day!
