Week 20 – Science

{Homemade} Science

We took science to the kitchen today & learned about how “elements” can change when combined. First, we tasted both lemon and sugar separately.  One was tart while the other was sweet. Then we tasted some homemade lemonade to see how combining one tart ingredient with one sweet ingredient plus some water would change the “elements.”  When the ingredients were combined in a drink, the flavor was quite different & much more appealing!

Next we mixed up some different “elements” – heavy cream, vanilla & sugar – and exposed them to cold – from ice & kosher salt – & movement.  Using our ice cream ball, we rolled, shook & mixed up our “elements.” Our “elements” mixed together & got colder to form a tasty soft serve ice cream. Yumm! It was a good day for science!

Here’s a recipe for homemade ice cream with all the same ingredients as ours, but using a bag to mix the ice cream instead! For a non-dairy option, one user even commented that she used coconut milk & it was delicious.  How are you having fun learning about science this week? I’d love to hear your ideas!
